Bruņinieku iela 76
Bruņinieku iela 76. Bruņinieku iela 76 is an unusual example of how contemporary architecture has been inserted into Riga’s older wooden-building districts without completely erasing the past. The property originally contained a modest two-storey wooden house that stood abandoned for years and became part of the slowly disappearing historical fabric between Avotu and Valmieras streets. In the 2010s, architects Andris Vītols and Artūrs Bolmanis redesigned the site into a multi-storey residential and office building, deliberately preserving the historical street volume while contrasting it with stark minimalist additions. The result is a sharp dialogue between old and new: a restrained historic façade facing the street, while bright contemporary upper floors with terraces and balconies rise above it. Unlike Riga’s ornate Art Nouveau landmarks, Bruņinieku 76 relies on clean geometry, white surfaces and ascetic proportions, making it feel almost Scandinavian in character. Today the building stands as a visible reminder that Riga’s architectural story is not only about preservation, but also about the tension between historical memory and modern urban redevelopment.
