Shopping mall collapse in Zolitūde

As you may probably have heard in the news, just a couple of days after it's anniversary celebrations Latvia experienced it's deadliest accident in history. According to latest news, 51 people have died after roof collapse of Maxima shopping mall in Zolitūde district. All previous night firemans worked trying to find and save people from the ruins (several of them also got killed after the second collapse). They still continue working and the death toll can rise. It's hard to think about the people who got trapped there and about their relatives who waited all night and day outside the supermarket in hope to see their beloved ones alive. Many of them didn't...

There are several theories about the possible cause of tragedy. On the roof, construction workers have started to build a children's playground and "winter garden", and possibly the heavy materials were too much for the roof's durability. But project planners says the load was calculated with a large reserve... So probably the building wasn't built precisely enough, in accordance to project? I happened to take a photo of the building in it's construction phase, in June 2011. Don't know if it's possible but maybe for experts such photos are usable, to determine what could have been possibly wrong in the building process... Click to see full size version.
