Out-of-Riga Sunday: Jelgava

Jelgava, located just 50 km to south-west from Riga, is 4th largest town of Latvia with it's ~70 000 inhabitants. Before 2nd World War, Jelgava was perhaps the second most beautiful (sharing this honor with Liepāja) town in Latvia, but it experienced almost complete destruction when Soviets came back in and bombarded the city, ruining 93% of it. After the war, Jelgava was rebuilt in "Soviet style" - boring, depressingly similar buildings, unproportional public spaces. In this pic 3 of old times architecture monuments of this town are visible - Academia Petrina building (to the right) and 2 churches.

  4. This is absolutely stunning! I love the rich detail, the color, and the subject matter. It is all so "real" looking. I feel like I am standing at a window and looking out at this scene. - Also, I enjoyed reading the history of this place!
